The Purvanchal Expressway is a 341 km, 6-lane access-controlled expressway connecting Lucknow to Ghazipur in eastern Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the landmark infrastructure projects of the Yogi Adityanath government, inaugurated in November 2021 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The expressway passes through 9 districts of eastern UP — Lucknow, Barabanki, Amethi, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Mau, and Ghazipur — transforming connectivity in the historically under-served Purvanchal region.
An airstrip built into the expressway in Sultanpur district allows Indian Air Force aircraft to land for emergency operations, making it strategically significant.
